Invisalign is generally a comfortable orthodontic treatment.

If you are looking for a way to straighten your teeth without going through the process of having traditional metal braces, you might consider Invisalign. The treatment is very discreet, and can be used to resolve a range of orthodontic issues. You may be wondering, however, whether or not the treatment is painful. Invisalign is generally considered very comfortable, but there is the risk of mild and temporary discomfort, especially when the aligners are first placed. Read on to find out more about Invisalign and what to expect from the process…

Can you expect any pain?

Although Invisalign aligners are generally considered very comfortable, you may experience some mild pain in the first week or so of treatment. As you become used to the feeling of your aligners, any discomfort should subside within a few days. In fact, the pain associated with the beginning stages of Invisalign treatment is typically mild and temporary.

You may also feel some mild discomfort when you replace your aligners, but this should also resolve fairly quickly. In general, Invisalign aligners are considered more comfortable than traditional braces, and because they don’t involve the use of any metal wires or brackets, the risk of irritation or injury to the soft tissues in the mouth is very low.

How can pain be resolved?

When it comes to adjusting to the feeling of your new aligners, one of the best things you can do is to wear them for the recommended length of time each day. Invisalign should ideally be worn for at least 22 hours every day, and the more you wear them, the more likely you are to get used to them and enjoy good results in a shorter period of time.

If you are really struggling with discomfort, it is important that you raise the concern with your dentist. In some cases, your aligners may need to be adjusted for a more comfortable fit. Over-the-counter medications can also help to alleviate pain in the first few days of your treatment, while dental wax can help to lubricate the edge of your aligners and reduce friction that could be causing pain in the gums.

Are you a suitable candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is often an effective treatment for those who would like to straighten their teeth. It can be used to resolve a number of issues, including crowding and many bite-related issues. Some of the orthodontic issues that can be addressed with Invisalign include gaps between the teeth; open bite; overbite; underbite and crossbite. It is important to note that Invisalign is not always suitable for the treatment of very complex orthodontic issues. If you are considering the treatment but are not sure if you are a suitable candidate, we recommend that you come in for a consultation. Your dentist will perform a thorough examination and let you know if the treatment is right for you. If you decide to go ahead with the treatment, your dentist will create a 3D image of your mouth and jaw, which will be used to plan your treatment and visualise your results. Your aligners will be custom-made for you to maximise both comfort and efficiency. Your dentist will explain how to take care of your aligners and let you know how long you will need to wear them for.
