Gum pain can be caused by a number of factors, including some common habits.

If you are struggling from gum irritation or pain, it is possible that some of your own habits and activities are actually causing you harm. The good news, however, is that if you can identify the cause of your discomfort, it is possible to prevent further damage and pain. Read on to discover some of the most common causes of gum irritation, and what you can do to keep your gums in good condition…

1. Brushing too hard

While it is important to clean your teeth and gums regularly and thoroughly, over-brushing with too much pressure can actually cause harm to your gums. It’s important to remember that your gum tissue is quite delicate and pressing too hard can cause irritation and even infections. To effectively remove plaque and food debris from your teeth and gums, brush gently with small, precise strokes. It is also advisable that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush as this won’t cause damage to your enamel or gum tissue.

2. Flossing incorrectly

When you floss your teeth, it is important that you do so gently. Vigorous movements can cause your gums to bleed and lead to irritation and pain. To floss effectively but gently, move the piece of dental floss slowly back and forth and up and down. With a gentle level of pressure, floss around the base of the teeth. You should avoid snapping the floss as this can cause cuts and bruises to the soft gum tissue. If you need some help mastering your flossing technique, be sure to raise your questions and concerns with your dentist who will be able to provide you with helpful tips and information.

3. Eating certain foods

Unfortunately, certain foods can contribute to gum pain and irritation. Foods that are particularly hard and crunchy, such as hard candy and potato chips, can cut and scrape the gum tissue and cause irritation in the mouth. If you feel like something crunchy, opt instead for fresh fruits and veggies like apples, celery or carrots — these healthy alternatives have a fibrous texture that can actually help to scrub away food particles and bacteria. They also stimulate the flow of saliva while you chew, which helps to keep your mouth moist and clean.

4. Using over-the-counter whitening treatments

While professional whitening treatments are safe and effective, over-the-counter products can cause gum irritation if the gum tissue is exposed to the peroxide that they contain. Products like trays and whitening strips that can be purchased in stores are not custom designed to fit your mouth properly, which means that you run the risk of peroxide coming into contact with your gums.

If you would like to brighten the appearance of your smile, speak to your dentist about a treatment that is customised for you. Your dentist will ensure that the bleaching agent does not touch your gums, and the treatment is completely pain-free.
