Or: how you can enjoy chocolate at Easter and still take care of your teeth

Easter and Christmas seem to be the two times of the year when it’s okay to indulge. All the things we tend to eat in moderation throughout the year are bought in bulk and enjoyed over a week or so. Which isn’t a bad thing: necessarily. If you consume sugary foods and snacks in moderation throughout the rest of the year, the occasional splurge shouldn’t do you too much harm provided you take care of your oral, and overall, health.

5 steps from G Dental to protect your teeth this Easter, and still enjoy chocolate

Easter is a time for chocolate and hot cross buns (among other things). While you could choose to abstain from all delicious sugary snacks, there are other options that can let you enjoy chocolate and maintain good oral hygiene.

1] Mix up your snacking

When enjoying chocolate, it can also be a good idea to snack on healthier foods like celery, cheese, apples and carrots. Snacking on these particular foods can help saliva production which is good for minimising the risk of tooth decay. Cheese has calcium and proteins which are good for your teeth and gums. Apples and celery have a high water count and their fibrous flesh can act as a natural toothbrush to clean your teeth.

2] Drinking water

Whether it’s a snack or a main meal, you should always drink water after you eat. This is good for rinsing food particles from your mouth and minimising the staining to your teeth.

3] Chew sugar-free chewing gum

In between meals, and after snacks, it is a good idea to chew sugar-free gum. It also promotes saliva production and it also helps to remove food debris from the crevices of your teeth. If you’re the type of person to rush out the door while still eating breakfast, chewing sugar-free gum is a good way to take care of your teeth until you can brush your teeth

4] Brushing and flossing

You should brush your teeth twice a day, and floss at least once a day. Keep in mind you shouldn’t brush your teeth for at least half an hour after eating to allow the enamel of teeth to recover. Flossing is an important part of your daily oral hygiene routine. Flossing your teeth reaches parts of your teeth that a toothbrush can’t: which can help to reduce your risk of tooth decay.

5] Visit G Dental for regular check-ups

With regular dental check-ups, your G Dental dentist can assess your oral health as well as provide you with a scale and clean. Regular check-ups are a good way to ensure your oral health is on the right track.
